By following these steps, you'll minimize unnecessary charges and only pay for what truly matters—the car and taxes. Fewer fees mean fewer surprises, giving you the flexibility to rent for longer or even upgrade to a nicer vehicle without stretching your budget.
1. Book in Advance
Booking ahead isn’t just convenient—it’s a great way to save money! Trip fees are significantly lower when you book in advance. Here’s how you can take advantage of this:
Reserve Your Rental for a Future DateStart by checking if the car is available for a nearby future date. Book the rental for that date to lock in the lower trip fees.
Modify the Pickup Date After BookingOnce the booking is confirmed, adjust the trip details by modifying the pickup date to the same day you actually need the car.
This simple strategy ensures you pay reduced fees while still getting your rental when you need it. Just be sure the car is available on both the future date and your actual travel date before booking. Easy, right?
2. Avoid the Young Driver Fee
If you’re between 21 and 25 years old, Turo charges a young driver fee. However, there’s a way to reduce this cost if your parents or an older relative are traveling with you:
Book the Car Under Their NameHave your parent or older relative, who is 25 or older, book the car in their name to avoid the young driver fee.
Add Yourself as an Additional DriverOnce the booking is made, ensure you’re added as an additional driver.
This way, the young driver fee is waived, and you’re still fully covered. It’s an easy way to save if you’re traveling with family!
3. Go for Longer Rentals
Short rentals (1–2 days) come with higher trip fees per day. The fix? Book for three days or more! Turo rewards longer bookings with lower daily trip fees, so you get more time with the car for less money.
4. Decline the Protection Plan (If You’re Covered)
If you already have full-coverage insurance, skip Turo’s protection plan! It’s an optional fee, and you don’t need it if your personal policy covers rentals. Simply decline this extra charge during booking, and you’ll avoid spending money on something you don’t need.
5. Look for Discounts
Many hosts offer promo codes or discounts for longer rentals or first-time bookings. Always check the listing or contact the host to see if a discount is available. It’s free to ask, and you might save even more!
